Camp is Here! Cornell Football 2009

It's Time

Football Camp 2009

When you LOVE something its often the case that you’ll do anything to ensure that you won’t have to LIVE without it … Some people say Football is HARD I say DUH … It should be, I tend to refer to Football as my Girlfriend b/c since I started playing the game back in the 8th grade at age 10 I couldn’t imagine doing anything else during the FALL. Part of me is EMPTY After the Weeks that I rest to let my body recuperate after an intense season.

It’s in MY BLOOD … Football has taught me a lot about myself, about others and has afforded my opportunities that some people can’t get in a normal lifetime. I owe a lot to this GAME and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A NEW SEASON is about to BEGIN here at Cornell and It’s one FULL of Excitement. Our Team has TRANSFORMED, approximately 20+ Players have QUIT since this past season and heading into Camp it looks like it was for the better b/c although there is STRENGTH in NUMBERS this TEAM the people that have stayed on BOARD are people that I am VERY confident in Heading into this upcoming Season. Life is FULL of Choices, Opportunities, and WE need to take advantage of Obstacles and options we have thrown our WAY. We are a NEW TEAM on a Mission and after an Awesome Opening Day we Kick things off Tomorrow at 6am …

I know that this upcoming YEAR for me at Cornell is gonna be one to REMEMBER I don’t know why but a lot Excites me about the summer winding DOWN. For EVERYTHING you Encounter in life this QUOTE usually suffices and can have resonance in the daily operation.

“Without PAIN, Without SACRAFICE, We Would have Nothing!”

So Keep that in Mind and realize that in order to make gains in your LIFE you must be willing to enter a state of discomfort and embrace it as opposed to running away!

Thanks for TUNING IN …

Aaron Sistrunk

aka

The BEST Coach/Trainer/Mentor on EARTH!

Some people may think he’s CRAZY, but I think he’s relentless, but in a GOOD way. Aaron has been a great coach/ friend/ mentor over the years and has been there for me throughout my high school career and continues to look out for me in any way that he can now that I’m up at Cornell.

I made the decision to play running back my freshman year of high school. Having previously only played wide receiver this was a stretch but in the end it was one of the best decisions I have made in my entire life. That first day of camp I was introduced to a man that would be instrumental in my development and over time he would instill values that I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life.

Coach Aaron was the strength and conditioning coach, friend, and mentor that most people dreamed of. He’s honest, selfless, motivational, and inspiring. College recruiting was a big phase in my life and with the help from Coach Aaron I entered the process more confident and more prepared then a lot of my peers. To this day you can honestly tell the different strength and conditioning coaches people interacted with in their high school careers. Someone’s transition into college workouts is a great judgment of the types workouts people were exposed to during high school. He gave me an advantage and truly prepared me for the rigorous expectations that come as a part of being a dedicated college football player. He exposed me to a lot of workouts that have yet to be introduced on most college campuses and he was always informative and innovative which kept me interested in the different workouts. I enjoy working out but when he was able to diversify our workouts he made them that much better.

One area coach Aaron helped me tremendously is my Mental Toughness. I believe I have been gifted and always have been secure mentally but after interacting with him hit to my mentality and mindset to a different level. Coach truly showed me how to manage the hardships of being successful and motivated me to take me life and my football career to the next level. In football you’d be surprised to know that over 50% of the GAME is mental and through my workouts ad different experiences with him I am prepared to take on these challenges and embrace the different expectations or hardships.

I have come along way from the Football player I used to be and a lot of it has been due to the help of Coach Aaron. Even though he has had the opportunity to workout great athletes like: Ibro Campbell, Wayne Crawford, Lamar McPherson, Mike Mattei, Julian McFadden and this Baseball Fella Jimmy Rollins … I know deep down in his Heart I’ll always be his FAVORITE … lol

Coach Aaron TRANSFORMED my Career, my Mentality, and my Approach for preparing my body for the sport I LOVE … you gotta love ‘em

Thanks for EVERYTHING so far COACH I couldn’t do it without YOU! Plus, I know no matter what my career path is that you’ll be apart of it …

Brandon Zachary Johnson

aka

BZJ, BZ, Chris Carter, Brandon, The REALEST!

He's PHONY, she's FAKE … That's the type of people I HATE …

BZ is the REALEST Person I KNOW! Now, I’m not playing when I say this, I have known him for about 8 or 9 years and out of all of FRIENDS and people that I have interacted with he has changed the LEAST and “I Love Him” for that … Of Course he has Matured lol to an extent but he’s the same person I found climbing the tree on our front lawns with crisp khakis and a cherry red button up one day after school about 9 years ago …

Over the years our friendship has evolved but at one point we were like best friends, He used to live next door to me, and before he moved we were pretty close. As MOST of you may know WE both LOVE sports, Mainly Basketball, and Football … In Basketball we are UNDEFEATED we’d play random people in 2 on 2 and to this day we have a record that’s about 13 – 0. We took Pride in our Friendship and to made us play better. In Football we were equally dominant and his nickname was Chris Carter, and mines was Randy Moss back when we were young and virtually unstoppable.

I think its safe to say that lot of people have friends that act differently with different crowds, often they become more shy, or attempt to be funnier, either way this tends to make the interactions or general mood awkward. BZ never changes, his personality is the same with parents, but more respectful as it is with a group of his peers. He has taught me that you have to keep your identity and values consistent and that no one should have such an influence over you to make you change who you are.

When you mold to impress people you tend to become fake and the things that you do and the way that you live becomes a lie. Like my Mom always said, “If you don’t LIE you don’t have to remember ANYTHING b/c the truth will show itself eventually.” Being in college and interacting with thousands of people makes it hard to understand people sometimes and you really can’t tell whose genuine and who you can actually count on, BZ always serves as a reminder to me to do my best and be there for people and be the same Rashad that I was last semester. Living this way has helped me form great friendships and create a pretty big network so far.

I don’t believe that I LOSE friends, I think I have been blessed over the years and my network continues to grow, I couldn’t have done this as successfully without the example set by BZ. Life’s TOUGH, but in the END it’s ALL about Who You Know!

I want to thanks BZ for being there for me and always keeping it REAL no matter what the situation or circumstance, we’ve been through a lot in our lives and I can always count on him to be REAL and Honest when confronting a situation …

This makes it very easy for me to look to him in my times of need b/c he's a GREAT Friend ...

Thanks for Tuning In ...

Till next time ...

INSPIRATION

This is a BOOK I just Finished and I wanted to share some of the Quotes from it that I believe are both Meaningful and Inspiring. These Quotes are useful to HELP anyone trying to excel or better understand your Life purpose ...

Hope you find them as Useful as I do:

"Those who have the most profound things to say often speak the least."

"Striving for Greatness is a 'Life Mission'."

"In order to be the BEST you have to be be willing to be uncomfortable and embrace it as a part of your growth process."

"Don't settle for MEDIOCRITY, but strive each day for EXCELLENCE it requires HARD WORK, preparation, and hours of effort, but it's Worth It."

"Five Percent of a person's life is made up of our performance on game day, while 95 percent is made up of the time we are preparing, practicing, and waiting to perform."

"To be great you have to commit to challenging process of preparation."

"The difference between the BEST and the REST is very small."

"Sometimes a man has to be isolated and have no way out before he is willing to look within and above."

"When the best are amidst their performance, they aren't thinking 'What if I win?' or 'What if I lose?' They are not thinking 'What if I make a mistake or miss my shot?' They are not interested in what the moment produces but are only concerned with what they produce in the moment."

"Success, rewards, accolades, fame, and fortune are merely by products for those who are able to seize the moment-not those who look beyond it."

"The BEST perform their BEST in the face of pressure, not in the absence of it."

"Love casts out all FEARS. If you're a mom or dad, you wouldn't walk across a busy highway for fear of getting hit by a car. But if your child ran into the street you would run after them. Because LOVE casts out ALL Fear. LOVE is more powerful than FEAR!"

"The BEST Leave a Legacy!" What do you want yours to be? ...

"The BEST make everyone around them better through their own pursuit of excellence and in the excellence they inspire in others."

"Being the BEST is short lived. Eventually someone will come along who is better. It doesn't last. but the person you become and the impact you hve on others are timeless."

Keith Watson

aka

My BEST Friend!

Many people spend a lifetime looking for that special person. When in reality your life would be a whole lot better if you find that special friend. Keith definitely makes my life better and partially the reason why I tend to claim “Life’s Too Good!” Firstly, I would like to know how many people out there have BEST Friends? If so, why are they your BEST Friend and what characteristics or qualities separates them from the rest of the pack? I used to think it was pretty funny when people would ask me that question but I believe if everyone gives it serious thought either you have a best friend or you don’t it’s pretty black and white if you ask me …
So what does Keith have that makes us Besties? lol

Keith Watson:

Funny
Good Listener
Honest
Competitive
He Can Rap
Hard Worker
lol … Last but not LEAST! We got them 8 Packs …

Out of Everything Keith has done for me over the years aside from his qualities is that he’s very accountable and keeps it real. I’m a little more optimistic, but the way he handles things sort of keeps me level headed. Whenever I ask him for help or advice he’s there or he finds a way to reach out to me and in turn I return the favor. I consider him a brother and never hesitate to include him in any plans of mine, although this sometimes annoys my family slightly, but oh well. They’ve gotten used to it over the years. I think due to his presence my life has been a lot smoother and I believe everyone should get a BEST Friend. Keith has taught me that being there for someone is as important as talking to them but your actions are what truly account for ones credibility. They SPEAK louder then words and it's the one true way to prove yourself to a person. He’s always been there for me and I try my BEST to be there for him.

Friends are the centerpiece to ALL of my SUCCESSES I know that I would be LOST without them! In accessing a TRUE Friendship ask yourself 3 Questions: Can you count on them under MOST circumstances? Do you care about their well-being and growth through Life? Lastly, think back through some of the BEST experience you have had so far, has that person experienced any of them with you or been affiliated in some way? I think this will let you know the TRUE standings of your Friendships …

Without Friends I’d be EMPTY!

The Dynamic Duo!

Mike Brown & Tariq Fowler

One’s Tough the Other Stands his Ground!

They both are Fierce Competitors and hate to LOSE!

Lastly, they are very supportive brothers and they look out for me in any way that they can.

Mike:

My Brother Mike is the tougher one if you all don’t know. Although we don’t interact that frequently we have a great understanding and have similar mentalities. The term “Go Getters” represents both of us very well; Mike has helped me in this area tremendously. It’s like the lyrics to Brittany Spears song “Circus”. There's only two types of people in the world, The ones that entertain and the ones that observe. As much as I don’t really admire Brittany Spears this statement is very true.

Ask yourself a question are you someone that always comes up with suggestions and ideas that would be cool but never actually follow through i.e. “the observer” or are you the person that makes things happen, taking advantage of your resources turning ideas into reality i.e. “the entertainers.” A great idea or suggestion can only go so far.

Mike has showed me that the scale of things you can pull off or organize are not limited to your imagination and that if you work hard enough things that are seemingly impossible at first can be pulled together with less strain than you think. This quality has helped me in many ways and gives me the confidence to follow through with some of the outlandish ideas people come up with for instance “making a video” What seemed like a crazy thought turned into a great learning experience and priceless entertainment.

Tariq:

By now you know that Tariq is the one that stands his ground. Tariq is calm, similar to me, we can both act a fool when necessary but we have that inner quiet confidence. Basically, we don’t say much, we talk trash every once in a while, but we like to prove ourselves through our actions. Talk can only get you so far.

Tariq and me are so similar I have reached out to him in times where I feel like others won’t understand or they just might over think situations. He has helped me in every instant that I have called upon him over the years and he never really asks too many questions. He trusts me and is a very encouraging person; he’s a man of action, which makes him so much more influential. He’s is reliable; I’ve seen him do things that I thought were simple gestures at the time, but thinking back on them he really defies the statement “Impossible is Nothing.”

Tariq makes time for his family and friends … He has never let me down and his attitude makes me hold myself more accountable as a family member, friend, co-worker, and teammate. I make it a priority to be available and reach out to others, whether or not they can or decide to do the same. I’ve learned different things from a lot of my friends over the years and since I don’t lose them this method definitely works so ima keep it up.

Brandon Bing # 10

aka

The Fastest Person I Know!

How's does Bing influence Rashad Campbell, well when your a competitor and you see someone else doing well their success and work ethic become contagious.

Me and Bing first met in Middle School. I remember the days when we would both run the 100m Dash and Bing would be nearly done the race and he'd be cheering me on (lol, while he was still running) knowing that he had his place solidified. We did damage that year as teammates on the 4x100m relay team and we would cross paths a few more times due to our athletic ability.

Over the years I have been asked "Who's better at Football, You or Brandon Bing," my reply would be I think I'm more natural, but the boy is so fast that in the end he can make up for our sparing difference in natural ability. If you look at our high school careers people may have easily looked to crown me the victor, but I was just in a better situation over at CHA so that would be an unfair judgment of our talent. You'll notice that to this day I have never given anyone a definite answer but I keep telling myself that speed kills and that I was the more natural one. This upcoming season we are both on pace to be the starters at the corner back position at our respective institutions "Rutgers and Cornell" ...

Bing has taught me the difference between being "Confident and believing in yourself" versus being "A Cocky Ass Hole that everyone thinks smells themselves a little too much!" Although a lot of people are under the impression that we both may fit the latter stereotype I've been humbled through the interactions I have had with Bing over the years and truly understand his swag and how he carries himself and it has helped me develop and better understand who I am.

I no longer live my life worrying about others opinions of ME. I stick to what I know, either you like me for who I am or you don't. I'm a little stubborn, but I'll admit if if I make a mistake, then apologize on my own terms. After that I'll will move on, lastly I'm not one to dwell on the past. The way I treat people is pretty simple, "I Care!" and I've learned that one interesting way to figure out if people truly care about you is whether or not you can annoy them because that means they honestly care ... Otherwise, why would they waste their time? So don't take it personal when I piss you off I might just be doing it intentionally, but that another topic for a different day ...

Bing has helped me as an Athlete, a Person, and as a Friend ...

More than just a NUMBER …

In my LIFE I have worn the Football Numbers:

MAB: # 80, # 9 … Little Quakers: # 32 … CHA: # 47, # 21, # 2 … Cornell: # 23, # 2

In the END I have chosen the # 2 for a number of reasons and not simply because it’s COOL! It’s a little bit deeper then that! …

The ONLY Greats in Society aka # 1’s in Today’s Society that I can think of are: Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, and Tim Tebow ... Among a few others …

But I pose this statement to say that these individuals are elite in each of there respective sports that they represent and yet and still they are only likely to hold the # 1 spot in these sports for a limited time period. Like all of the Clichés 1 REALLY is the LONELIEST Number in a lot of instances and in sports it’s no different. When you’re the BEST people LOVE you, they HATE you, it’s hard to depict who are friends from those who are enemies. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying I’m afraid to be the BEST but I’ve learned that until you reach a particular point in your career when you seemingly go into auto pilot and you are virtually unstoppable being the BEST isn’t even an option. It takes a certain mentality that I am still learning to understand and I know that through my competitive nature I plan to take full advantage to realize the difference between the BEST and the REST.

No matter what you’d like to believe while your out with your Mom for a Sunday Brunch or a nice dinner with that significant other someone else in your sport one of your competitors is getting better. I have told myself this and this reality serves as motivation when you’re away from school, when you wake up sore and think that you might need to rest or take a day off. I think the biggest key to being successful is as individuals and a human society WE FEEL SORRY for ourselves ENTIRELY TOO MUCH! I believe this is the way we are genetically designed, pain is not supposed to be enjoyed nor should it be endured therefore we tend to shutdown and make the seemingly logical decision until we are no longer uncomfortable.

I am my mother’s 2nd child … Giving me the unofficial title of # 2. I am more athletic than my older brother, taller, but not smarter. At the same time I am more athletic than my younger brother, slower, shorter, and less smart ☺. It’s interesting how things work. Although I am the # 2 child of my Mom’s Children I created my competitive nature through my total collective contributions of my 8 brothers.

Every year wherever you are you enter a season and you know exactly who number 1 is not because you actually care but internally your saying “With the audacity to wear # 1 that kid better be good and sure enough that person usual is good at least relative to his teammates!” It’s like a societal standard to make the # 1 one of your best players if not the best player, but I hate being Normal or fitting in with the Status QUO! Be Uncommon!

I Love the fact that I wear the # 2 … It is a constant reminder that I’m not the BEST nor am I # 1 … This constant reminder drives me to be the BEST in everything I do … Even me and my two brothers on my Mom’s side compete to be the # 1 son, we never can officially say who it is but I know when is boils down to it Momma always picks ME! ☺

Wearing the # 2 keeps me on the right path to better my life and I believe EVERYONE should have some type of medium that keeps them focused in LIFE … Because it’s how WE as individuals handle the little things that will determine how the BIG Picture ill unfold for us ALL! You have One, NOT TWO Lives to Live, so MAKE this ONE Worthwhile!
